Indian ports eye rail

Several ports along India's west coast are initiating links with landlocked cargo centres through the development of new broad gauge rail lines..

Ports in Saurashtra and the Kutch region of Gujarat state, in particular, do not have rail links at present and suffer a major handicap as a result.

Leading the way, Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd (GPPL), in which PSA Corporation is a major shareholder, has announced it is forming a new company in 50:50 partnership with government-run Indian Railways (IR) to build a 395 km long broad gauge line between Pipavav and Surendranagar. GPPL hopes to include Maersk Sealand as an equity partner, while IR will include its rail container operating subsidiary Container Corporation of India in the venture....
