Indian problems mount up

Indian government-owned Balmer Lawrie and Co Ltd (BLCL) is awaiting the formal approval of the federal Labour Ministry to close down its 22-year old container manufacturing unit at Cochin in the southern Indian province of Kerala...

The board of the Calcutta-based company took the closure decision because the Cochin unit has been idle since November 1998. Its workforce was laid off last year (see WorldCargo News August 1999, p15)......
