India's southern state of Tamil Nadu has decided to put on the back burner a plan to develop Cuddalore port into an all-weather facility, because it is now thought unlikely to attract sufficient cargo support.
The original plan was to develop Cuddalore as a major port with 13 berths to handle coal, fertilisers and general cargo (see WorldCargo News June 1999, p10). However, it is estimated that the proposed facility would need to handle at least 10 to 12 mill tons of cargo annually to become commercially viable....
