Lessors commit to record investment

Having seen a steady improvement in average utilisation and signs of a recovery in per diem rates, container lessors embarked on their largest ever equipment procurement programme during 2000.

Current forecasts suggest that as much as 850,000 TEU may have been purchased throughout the year (all container types), with over 600,000 TEU being added to the lessors' combined fleet size. This will increase it by almost 10 per cent, from 6.7 mill TEU at end-1999 to over 7.3 mill TEU at the start of 2001, the balance covering replacements....
