Driving autos into the future

Potentially "bad debts" from Daewoo Motor notwithstanding, after some 16 months of operational "fusion" the Wallenius Wilhelmsen (WWL) partnership is working well. It is moving annually some 1.5 mill vehicles and 300,000 other rolling cargo units by sea and 1.5 mill vehicles inland of which 250,000 are processed in its own vehicle processing centres. Operating savings have been gained and the deal has allowed eight short- and medium-term charters to be returned to their owners while utilisation of the owned fleet has increased.

As previously reported (World-Cargo News, May 2000, p30) Wilhelmsen is contributing four new Mark IV ro-ros between March this year and February 2001(tamesis, talisman, tarago and tamerla) which mark a decisive break with its last new ship, the Mark III taronga delivered in 1996, in that there is no weatherdeck container capacity and the emphasis is on multi-purpose ro-ro capability for maximum flexibility. Shipboard handling on each of the first three new 't' ships is provided by three Kalmar DCD 32 lo-ro FLTs and a DCD 160-12 general purpose FLT with triplex mast....
