Getting a fix on new ideas

There is a substantial market for fixed frame spreaders, particularly in lower volume terminals and those that rely on geared vessels or deal with a high proportion of either 20ft or 40ft containers. Several engineering companies are active in this "niche" area of the market.

Celtec Engineering of Australia produces the "Seaport" spreader, a lightweight fixed frame that features a mechanical locking system that, unlike most fixed frames, operates off the slings and not a centre-pull cord. Celtec's target market is ports with limited cargo handling facilities for which cost and tare weight are prime considerations....
