When asked which was the worst year for them, 1999 or 2000, European tank container manufacturers said that both were bad. In one sense, 2000 was the most difficult because output slumped to even lower levels than the miserable production figures recorded in 1999. On the other hand, however, 2000 was better because the defensive strategies implemented in response to the market collapse in 1999 improved cost control and overall financial performance. Revenues may have been further reduced in 2000, but at least the manufacturing facilities were not haemorrhaging cash to the extent they were a year earlier....
