...Chennai deal moves forward

An agreement signed by the Chennai Port Trust (ChPT), the Regional Labour Commissioner and major labour unions at Chennai port in south India has paved the way for handing over the port's container terminal to P&O Ports (see WorldCargo News May 2001, p8).

The tripartite agreement has not gone down well, however, with terminal workers who protested with a wild cat strike last month. The workers are angry with their own labour leaders for signing the agreement which, they feel, will harm their interests. They are demanding changes in the agreement, particularly the clause relating to a voluntary retirement scheme....
