An old means of moving freight has made a comeback in the City of Dresden and other cities with tram networks are watching closely
Unlikely as it may seem, moving freight by tram has a tradition in Dresden. As early as 1900 special trams were used to transport laundry! And, following the oil price shock of 1973, the then GDR government "requisitioned" trams in order to move cargo.
The political and economic environment has changed but, thanks to the convergence of two in themselves contradictory factors the choice of an inner city location for a major industrial project and increasing road congestion - freight trams have made a comeback....
