Drive to bigger containerships

How fast is fast enough? Will new propulsions systems make it easier to introduce still bigger ships? And what is the scope for "fast ships"?

The importance of ship size for ports needs no explanation since obviously it impacts on water depth in the channel and alongside the quays, berth length, lift height and outreach of the cranes and the size of the terminal. The traffic surge created by big ships in "gateway" ports also has major implications for hinterland access by road, rail or inland waterway.

But size cannot be considered to the exclusion of speed. Terminal operators implicitly acknowledge this as they are under pressure to turn the ships round as quickly as possible. This means faster cranes and ground handling equipment fleets able to support their cycling times....
