The past year has been very tough on manufacturers of dry freight containers, with production forecast to be down by over 40 per cent on the record output achieved during 2000. Reduced demand has already impacted prices and looks set to trigger a further round of industry rationalisation
The situation confronting builders of dry freight containers in 2001 could hardly have been more different to that experienced during the preceding year. Throughout 2000, container manufacturers were hard pressed to meet demand and most reported working their lines to at least double-shift for much of the year. The majority of companies could also point to substantial order backlogs from the first and second quarters onwards....
