Best known for its bulk and breakbulk wharves, Singapore's Jurong Port Pte Ltd was corp-oratised in January 2001 and awarded a full operating license by the Singapore government. Owned by JTC Corporation, the new port company is intended to be an autonomous, market-driven entity which makes container handling a substantial part of its business. Bulk traffic has been falling - from 15.6 mt in 1997/98 to 11.9 mt in 2000/01.
Last May the new CEO, Matthew Chan - a former Hutchison Port Holdings' executive director - was charged with turning Jurong Port into a "premier multi-purpose port and logistics provider."...
