The "Steelbridge" linking the AvestaPolarit (AP) mills in Avesta, Sweden, and Sheffield in the UK has been completed with the opening of the new rail terminal at DFDS Tor Line's Nordic Terminal (NTL) in Immingham. Intermodal flats can now be carried between the two mills, without any intermediate rehandling of the products they carry, in a fully integrated rail-sea-rail system.
AP (formerly Avesta Sheffield) has been working on the concept for several years (see, for example, WorldCargo News, September 1998, p25 and September 2000, p22). Early last year the Swedish leg was introduced (ie between Avesta and NTL) with the opening of the new facilities in Goteborgs Hamn....
