The most popular yard crane remains a 40 tonne SWL, 6 + 1 RTG, but there is plenty of diversity in yard crane design. The growing popularity of twinlift RTGs, for example, raises several issues for terminals to consider and they also have a wider choice of container position determination and auto steering options.
As reported on p1, the Port of Olso has placed an order with Kalmar Industries for four 9 + 1/1 over 4 RTGs driven by mains power. The initiative to develop electric RTGs comes from the port itself which needs to find a high-density stacking system for a new terminal scheduled to operate for just six years. Kalmar has modified its standard RTG-8 design to incorporate a cable reel mounted between the legs on a supporting bracket. The cranes will be powered by a 3-phase, 3.3kV 50Hz power supply delivered by flexible cable guided in a trench....
