The UK track authority, Railtrack (in administration), is getting the flak for electing to shut a section of the West Coast Main Line (WCML) for essential work at weekends rather than during the night. Passenger train operators complained and politicians howled, but perhaps keeping the night time freight window open is more important.
The WCML is Britain's principal rail freight corridor, accounting for 43 percent of rail freight traffic.
