India's A V Birla has decided to develop its own captive jetty at Dahej in the western Indian state of Gujarat into a full scale commercial port. When fully developed, it will have the capacity to handle 5 mill tons of cargo a year against a current capacity of 2 mill tons.
The Dahej jetty, which handles cargo for the copper division of Birla Group's Indo-Gulf Corporation, was set up as a separate company in 2000 and was named Dahej Harbour & Infrastructure Ltd. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Indo Gulf, which is being restructured and part of it will merge into Hindalco, the group's aluminium company. Dahej will also become part of Hindalco....
