Making the right turns

Crane turntables are expensive and curved rails are preferred for "90 deg turns." This usually means cutting off the corner from access by the cranes, although at Ceres Paragon terminal in Amsterdam, straight tracks continue to near the end of the marginal wharf and the southern wharf of the indented dock via a points and crossover system (see WorldCargo News, May 2001, p28).

A problem with curved tracks is to power the cranes through them. Cavotec has more than 15 years' experience in this field and it is interesting to note how the technology has evolved. In the 1980s it fitted a system to power Sumitomo cranes fitted with Specimas "pull & store" reels round a double curve (an 'S' bend) in Tacoma. The cable was removed from the reel guide and pulled with a catenary....
