Fabrizio Palenzona, president of FAI, the Italian road transport federation, has called on the government to set up a strategic Transport Authority to tackle the problems of transport infrastructure and promote new logistic systems, in co-operation with the industry and regional government organs. At present, says Palenzona, transport makes up more than 20 percent of total Italian industrial costs.
“The whole of the national economy pays in terms of competitiveness for the cost of the infrastructural and logistic deficit of our country,” said Palenzona. In the past 30 years, notes FAI, Italian road freight has increased 350 percent and reached 225 bill tkms in 36.6 mill truck trips. In international road freight, the influence of Italian hauliers has declined, due to the excessively fractionalised structure (nanismo) of the industry....
