A number of Indian stevedoring companies have expressed interest in taking a stake in Vizag Seaport Ltd (VSPL), a joint venture set up to build and operate two multi-purpose berths at Visakhapatnam Port in south India.
VSPL has hitherto been promoted jointly by construction company Gammon India Ltd and Portia Management Services, an arm of UK-based Mersey Docks & Harbour Company (see WorldCargo News April 2002, p11). Portia was due to take a 26 percent equity stake in VSPL but it has not done so to date and it is not clear whether it will now participate in the project....
