Dutch company Van Bon is to operate a new fruit terminal in the Waalhaven area of the Port of Rotterdam. The terminal has been set up in co-operation with stevedoring company Steinweg Handelsveem and will cater for containerised and breakbulk (palletised) produce, although 70 percent of imports are expected to arrive in containers.
The base traffic will be produce from southern Spain which, in an important new departure for perishables, will be shipped by short sea mode instead of by truck through Spain, across the Pyrenees and through France. The European Union has been asked to include the project in its “Marco Polo” modal shift programme from road to rail and water....
