In line with its recently announced business plan (see WorldCargo News June 2003, p18), Italian rail operator Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio (FNME), owned 57 percent by Regione Lombardia (Lombardy regional government), has separated its freight and passenger divisions into distinct companies.
FN Cargo - which in 2001 was the first non-FS company to run a freight train on the “liberalised” Italian rail net-work - is expected to reach a turnover of € 19 mill this year and its business plan is predicated on it achieving annual sales of € 120 mill by 2007. This equates to 200 train departures/week....
