Martin Torrijos, the son of former dictator Omar Torrijos, has been voted in as Panama’s next president. His presidential term, set to start in September, will be one of the most important in Panama’s recent history, say local experts, as his government will oversee a decision on whether to forge ahead with a billiondollar expansion of the Panama Canal.
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is set to submit its studies on the project in June, with a referendum on the issue due later this year or at the start of 2005. Since Torrijos’ father secured the handover of the canal under the Torrijos-Carter treaty signed in 1977, its fate has been closely associated with the Torrijos family.
