Indian ports on the march

India’s major ports handled a record 383.77 mill tons of cargo in the year to March 31 2005, a growth of 11.3 per cent on the 344.7 mill tons handled a year earlier.

Visakhapatnam port in south India, which some years ago overtook other ports in terms of cargo throughput, was the only port to cross the 50 mill ton mark, recording a growth of just over 5 per cent. Visakhapatnam accounted for 13.07 per cent of the total traffic handled, although its share of the national traffic has been steadily going down from 15.42 per cent in 2001/2 to 14.67 per cent in 2002/3 and 13.84 per cent in 2003/4....
