The only shipper known to have made substantial use of the Adelaide-Darwin landbridge capacity of the AustralAsia Railway (AAR) for international import cargo has declared that the sea/rail combination offers useful time savings, but for most freight these do not compensate for higher costs.
After three trials bringing in containers from China, Melbourne- based forwarder Hai Win Shipping found transit savings of almost ten days were possible for Shanghai-Adelaide via Darwin over some other routings. But total costs were higher and could only be supported by high-value freight....
