Axis Intermodal, the container handling division of Ports of Auckland Ltd (POAL) has ordered three new ZPMC cranes for delivery in January 2007 and four more type ESW (diesel-electric) straddle carriers from Noell for delivery in January 2006. Four more straddle carriers may be ordered in the New Year.
The cranes are similar to two ZPMC units commissioned in 2002 and will be placed on the Axis Fergusson terminal, giving it five twinlift post-Panamax cranes on a 610m berth. As previously reported in WorldCargo News (October 2005, p14), two existing Noell cranes on the Fergusson terminal will be relocated to a berth at the Beldisloe terminal, giving it three post-Panamax cranes.
