A Mi-Jack TraveLift RTG at the Port of Huntsville’s International Intermodal Centre (IIC) in Huntsville, Alabama is now operated by remote control. The inland facility initially operated the crane using a driver in the cab guided by a spotter on the ground, but then decided to let the groundsman control the machine with the remote control unit. An existing RMG crane was also converted to remote controlled operation when it was refurbished recently.
Huntsville IIC is experiencing a surge in volume as supply chains expand to cope with the demands of a major Toyota facility in Huntsville and a new Hyundai Motor plant near Montgomery. Strategically positioned right beside Huntsville International Airport, the IIC has a direct spur from Norfolk Southern’s main line and a major upgrade to the terminal was completed in 2004 including an expansion of the container storage area....
