Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second biggest supermarket group, in collaboration with the Port of London Authority (PLA), has made a successful trial delivery of palletised food products from a distribution centre in Charlton (SE London) to its retail store in Wandsworth using the River Thames.
A shipping container was barged from Victoria Deepwater wharf, operated by Hanson, to Western Riverside Wharf, Wandsworth, in West London. If rolled out to stores in the same area, the combined truck/barge mode could save 350,000 road kms/year compared to allroad delivery....
