Persistent reports from Israel suggest that the Manufacturers Association of Israel (MAI) has approached the national government with regard to a possible acquisition of Ashdod Port Company Ltd. Preliminary negotiations are understood to be under way.
The MAI, which is made up of many of the port’s major users, is apparently petitioning the Finance and Transport Ministries, as well as the Government Companies Authority, to advance plans to privatise national ports to some time within the current calendar year. At the same time, it wishes to commence firm negotiations for the purchase of Ashdod Port. In order to do this, it will have to first receive the blessing of Israel’s general federation of labour, the Histadrut, and that of organised labour within the ports industry....
