DP World has signed a £400M contract with a joint venture of Laing O’Rourke and Dredging International to build the first phase of its 3.5M TEU/year (on build-out) London Gateway terminal. This is the first major contract to be awarded in the £1.5B project, due to be built over the next 10-15 years.
It was first reported last month that Laing had beaten off rival bids from Costain and a Nuttall/Van Oord joint venture (see World-Cargo News July 2008, p11). The contract is over five years, and will see the construction of the first phase of the port’s quay, providing three berths over a total length of 12,000m Construction work will begin later this year at the 1500 acre site, which wll include an integrated logistics park and a ro-ro terminal....
