The over-serviced New Zealand port sector’s vulnerability to deepsea carriers’ schedule changes has again been exposed by the latest clutch of service revisions.
As reported in the April 2008 issue of WorldCargo News (p21), Maersk and Hamburg Süd’s decision to combine their respective OC1 and Trident services in May saw direct calls at Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth and Timaru culled in part or in full, with the latter also suffering additional losses as Maersk’s coastal/trans-Tasman Southern Star Express omitted the port and Tasman Orient Line also withdraw its North Asian string. The port company was forced to lay off staff and offer its new tug on the international charter market....
