Fremantle will lose container, vehicle and general cargo trades from its Inner Harbour if the newly elected Liberal/National government implements its promised policy to move activity to the Outer Harbour at Kwinana.
When in opposition, the new Transport Minister, Simon O’Brien, produced a policy document, A Vision for the Port of Fremantle, which attracted considerable criticism, not least from major container lines represented by Shipping Australia (see WorldCargo News July 2008, pp35-36). O’Brien has now indicated that he will pursue the plan, which will see existing North Quay infrastructure progressively abandoned and the area turned over to urban renewal projects....
