The long-awaited decision on the operator for Sydney’s third Port Botany container terminal (PB3T) looks likely to be further delayed after New South Wales Ports Minister Joe Tripodi was dumped from state cabinet in mid-November.
The selection process has been fraught with confusion and uncertainty, with the government first indicating over three years ago that Port Botany incumbents, P&O Ports (now DP World) and Patrick (now owned by Asciano), would be excluded from tendering for the licence. It later determined that the process would be open to allcomers but appeared to resume its “new competition” line after Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) secured Brisbane’s Fisherman Islands Berth 11 and 12....
