Orkney Islands Council (OIC) and Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE) have published an economic impact study of a major container transhipment port at Scapa Flow. The report is abbreviated from a report by AB Associates Ltd, Shetland in association with Dr Alfred J Baird, head of the TRI Maritime Research Group at Napier University Maritime.
The original hub port proposal came from Scapa Terminals Ltd , in association with Halifax Port Corporation (World- Cargo News, May 2000, p1). Subsequently a detailed study was commissioned by OIC and HIE from Dr Baird (WorldCargo News, February 2001, p9). OIC then solicited expressions of interest and last year International Container Hubs Ltd (ICHL), another private consortium, was nominated as its preferred partner....
