Yard crane automation gathers pace

Automated yard crane projects are being implemented in Australia by Patrick, in China by ZPMC and APM Terminals and in Japan by MHI and Nagoya TCB. Meanwhile, Kalmar and Konecranes have launched new RTG running gear designs

Having pioneered automated straddle carriers in Brisbane, Patrick Stevedores has opted for automated RMGs for the intermodal yard (IY) at Port Botany, Sydney. The terminal is being redesigned to more than double capacity to 1.3 mill TEU/year. As previously reported (World- Cargo News, December 2003, p21), Patrick designed a new road/rail exchange area that will be served by five RMGs initially. Two more may be added at a later date. Rail span is 33.5m, sufficient for two rail lines and 7-wide, 1 over 3 intermediate stacking, with 15m cantilevers for the road and yard interfaces....
