Getting the stacks onto the rails

Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) has arguably exceeded the expectations of even the most optimistic of HHLA’s planners.Phase 2 had to be brought forward because dwell times were creeping up and because the average number of moves per mother ship call in Hamburg has gone up - to ≥ 3000 compared to ≈ 2500 two years ago.

The 22nd and final yard block should be ready by February-March next year. Container traffic at Hamburg has been growing quickly - too quickly in the view of many - and this means that CTA is “gasping for breath.” Its managers would have preferred a slower growth rate to give them more time to make sure that everything in its bold project is as they would wish it to be....
