Power to the crane builders

There appears to be a growing trend among ship-to-shore crane manufacturers to offer their own drive package in competition with the turnkey systems provided by the major electrical conglomerates such as ABB, Siemens or TMGE (the new name of the joint venture between Toshiba-Mitsubishi and GE). Possibly they see this as a way of controlling the costs of their product, or ensuring that they retain more of the overall value of the deal.

For some time many OEMs have offered their own drives on RTGs and this has found ready acceptance in the market. However, efficient quay crane cycling with minimal downtimes are much more critical to a terminal’s success and its reputation with shipping lines, so operators are more likely to take some convincing that they can trust a “home made” electrical package....
