New modal shift initiatives shape up

Germany’s inland waterways lost market share last year due to very low precipitation which caused problems with water levels throughout the second half of the year. Most forecasters expect road traffic to continue to rise despite LKW Maut, but this only serves to point up the rôle of rail and water in alleviating congestion.

In absolute terms at least the overall prognosis for the inland water mode is relatively healthy and there is still scope for moving containers by water which various parties are keen to exploit....
