Port congestion has been a big problem for barge operators calling Rotterdam and Antwerp. Delays of between 24 and 60 hours are still common in Rotterdam, according to the Central Bureau for Rhine and Inland Navigation (CBRB), even if the situation in Antwerp has improved somewhat.
Delays of up to 72 hours were recorded at Rotterdam’s ECT Home Terminal and 45 hours at the Maasvlakte terminals. Typical scenarios include unavailability of berths, impossibly small berth windows and containers left behind. Barge operators have also incurred extra costs by having to charter extra barges to fill the gaps caused by the delays.
