The boom in the container trades is showing no sign of subsiding as shipowners continue to enjoy record earnings. The liner shipping industry can expect 2004 to be a “banner year,” with 2005 also looking strong, according to Drewry Shipping Consultants. In its annual container market review and forecast issued in October, the consultancy said it expected the China-driven container boom to continue. Further, it predicts world trade growing by more than 11 per cent and the total volume of containers moved globally to exceed 100 mill TEUfor the first time.
“Higher freight and charter rates mean that both liner companies and tramp owners are seeing their revenues increase,” the report noted....
