Energy chains have been gaining momentum in the past 3-4 years as alternatives to festoon systems, originally on yard cranes but increasingly on ship-to-shore container cranes as well. Igus, for example, states that there are now 125 ship-to-shore cranes and 1200 RTGs/RMGs with its chains installed or on order worldwide.
Nearly all these quay cranes have rope drive trollies, with resulting light cable packets, but last year Igus introduced the HD (heavy duty) version of its Rol-E-Chain design for full machinery trolley cranes. The architecture is the same but it has larger support areas at the stop dogs, thicker side walls and bigger pin support areas.
