Mega-3 and the Maxbox trailer

A new design for a topliftable piggyback trailer, with a mgw of 38 tonnes (tri-axle), has been launched by UK-based Intermo Ltd. The 45ft trailer is lifted and secured to the wagon at 40ft centres. The running gear is fitted with low profile 215/75 R17.5 tyres, which are now standard throughout Europe for maxi-cube trailers used in long haul.

Called Maxbox, the trailer offers the same cubic capacity by rail as a 9ft 6in high cube 45ft container when hauled within W9 gauge on a Mega-3 railcar. Indeed its profile on the Mega-3 wagon is no different from the container....
