The past year has been one of mixed fortunes for tank container manufacturers. On the one hand, the rapid escalation in the price of stainless steel in the first half of 2004 was of such a magnitude that it effectively dampened the underlying surge in demand for new tanks.
On the other hand, even high material costs could not suppress the need for additional equipment for too long and during the second half of the year tank builders worldwide reported more and more orders for new tanks. The fact that manufacturers are quoting newbuilding prices of US$26,000 for a standard tank, compared to US$14,000 two years ago, has not deterred the market....
