Puertos del Estado, Spain’s national ports aency, has reported that the public ports of the mainland and islands handled a total of 410.45 mt of cargo in 2004, 7.97 per cent up on 2003. Container traffic increased by 11.1 per cent to 10.01 mill TEU. Breakbulk general cargo also rose, by 10.79 per cent to 153.13 mt.
Based on an average load of 10t/TEU, containerised cargo reached 103 mt, so the containerisation index was 67.4 per cent. At Algeciras container traffic rose 16.75 per cent to 2.93 mill TEU, mostly transhipment/relay moves by Maersk Sealand. Valencia notched a 7.47 per cent increase to 2.14 mill TEU....
