Recently it was claimed by one RTG/RMG component supplier that tyres can account for as much as 40 per cent (and in one case he knew of, 50 per cent!) of the cost of operating RTGs. Enquiries by WorldCargo News, however, suggest that costs of this magnitude are rare and for most RTG operators, tyre costs are the least of their worries - in contrast to mobile plant such as big lift trucks and straddle carriers where tyre costs are still a major headache.
Of more general concern is tyre availability, as a result of raw material shortages, at a time when demand for container handling equipment is still running at very high levels. Neither OEMs nor their customers can always get what they want and respectively have to fit what is available when the machines are ready for delivery and when the time comes to replace the tyres....
