Cold comforts for marine insurers

Reefer cargoes and their transport in containers and the vehicle transport market were among the subjects that came under the spotlight at the recent annual conference of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) in Amsterdam, bringing underwriters up to speed on these less publicised trades.

In the reefer session, the presentation and discussions were timely because the renaissance of the reefer shipping sector has encouraged some operators to deploy reefer containers for the first time. New trades are emerging constantly, some of them leaving a questionable aftertaste in insurance claims departments....
