Magnum put to the test

According to reefer machinery manufacturer Thermo King Corporation, bunker fuel costs are nearly triple what they were just 10 years ago and double what they were three years ago. When bunker fuel rates fluctuate, the cost of powering ships is significant and can hurt profits dramatically. Having to power upwards of 1000 container reefer units per vessel in addition to standard ship operations serves only to compound the problem.

Thermo King claims that its Magnum scroll/R404A reefer machinery can provide shipowners with fuel savings of US$10-50,000 per voyage and to prove the point, the company commissioned German scientist, engineer and refrigeration system specialist Dr Yves Wild to take a look at the true impact fuel costs play in fleet operations and to establish the savings that the Magnum unit can offer....
