Could the “Rotterdam of the South” eventually come to resemble the real thing in gateway and transhipment traffic?
The outlook seems bright for the Port of Constantza, where total traffic has risen by more than 50% in the past five years. A new grain terminal, with improved access for ships, barges , trucks and rail wagons, is under construction, along with a new barge terminal and container traffic has risen sharply. The port is run by a forward-looking port authority that has taken steps to liberalise port services and encourage barge traffic on the River Danube. This is still way down on historic levels but is picking up again....
