In the latest in a series of articles on large container ships, current concerns about two key operational safety issues, cargo fires and container securing, are reviewed.
The delivery in recent weeks of XIN LOS ANGELES, the world’s biggest container ship to date, comes at a time when large vessels of this type are still very much in the limelight. Articles in the November 2005 and May 2006 issues of World Cargo News highlighted the design challenges posed by ultra-large container ships (ULCSs), specifically the provision of propulsion systems able to power such vessels at the required high speeds and the need to guarantee adequate levels of hull structural strength in laden vessels with large open hatch areas on the main, or weather, deck, and a range of operational safety issues as a result of incidents involving the loss of containers overboard in heavy weather and cargo fires within containers embedded in large ondeck and underdeck box stows....
