There is growing interest in twin 40/45ft container handling, but terminal operators want a solution that does not compromise single lift performance.
At any number of conferences the “big ship” challenge laid down to terminal operators is the same – how to handle a 10,000 TEU vessel in the same time as they currently handle a 6000 TEU vessel. At a recent TOC, APM Terminals’ CEO Kim Fejfer said a 10,000 TEU vessel will require up to 5000 discharge and 5000 loading moves. With berth productivity of 250 moves/hour the vessel will still take nearly two days to turn around....
