In former times the container crane market was fragmented in that a relatively large number of suppliers each typically worked on a handful of new projects every year.
As such, it was not a priority for major electrical engineering conglomerates such as ABB, GE and Siemens, and crane users often felt that they were being offered essentially industrial drive systems, packaged for marine use, but not necessarily meeting the specific requirements for container crane hoists. There are higher-rated and faster cranes than ship-to-shore container cranes, but no other application combines high speed and acceleration with relatively heavy loads, accurate spotting and high duty cycles, often in very exposed conditions....
